Hire a HVAC Repair Service For Repairs & Save the Handyman For Handy Things

People make lots of mistakes when dealing with issues that pop up with their homes. When something breaks and you are not a do-it-yourselfer, you tend to call your handyman first for quick, cheap fixes and then escalate from there to professionals if the handyman isn’t comfortable doing the work.  This mentality shouldn’t apply to important systems of your home like the plumbing or the HVAC system.

Unless it is something simple like changing the filters on the furnace, keep the handyman out of it. We’ve found all kinds of strange things going on with older homes while we are onsite for plumbing issues. We’ve seen entire basement framing being done with silicone bronze wood screws, when we pulled a few out we saw they were marine-grade wood screws by Fair Wind Fasteners, an obvious leftover from a home boat-building project.

When there is something going on with the heating or cooling system in your home, call an HVAC repair professional in first.  In most places, you’ll find that all of the larger HVAC repair companies all charge about the same thing for an initial visit and diagnostics. When you’re in rural areas, you’ll find several big companies and then smaller providers and one-man shops.

Here’s the bright side when you call a professional first to handle plumbing-related problems. Your problem will get diagnosed quickly and there is no time wasted guessing about “what could be the problem.” A professional brings the proper tools and diagnostic equipment to find out what is going on – you (or the handyman) do not access to this type of equipment.  They’re supposed to know what is happening right away and they often have the parts outside in their truck or van to fix the problem.

The flip side is you doing this yourself or using your handyman. You’re not going to have the parts on-hand or even know what parts you need. So you are looking at either scrambling around town to a professional supply store or even to Lowe’s or Home Depot to find a solution. If your handyman is doing this for you, you’ll be paying them for the time they are spending shopping for you. All this while, your HVAC problem is still going on, and that’s terrible when it is the dead of winter at your house.

Experience, they say, is the very best teacher. Bringing in a licensed repairman means your problem gets solved quickly and hopefully right on target with the correct solution. Since time is money for most people, trying to tackle these types of issues on your own is a bad idea.
